Tales of a Black Hat
You think outside the box:: WHAT BOX????
Someone once said to me "you know - you think outside the box.
To which i replied "what box?".
I wasn't trying to be smart and i wasn't trying to be arrogant. What i said, just came out, like an automatic reflex action. Like i was trying to defend myself from being hit by an oncoming train.
Years later, i had a chance to reflect on what i said. First my answer didn't really help me because at the time it added up to me losing my job as a systems integrator. Financial Directors don't like fuzzy calculations i guess, although my demise at the time was more to do with my lack of interest in playing the politics game than any functional deficit that i might have had.
But on reflection i did come to realise that my insistence to play the game from a blank sheet of paper was more annonying to my managers than i had first thought. I didn't respect what had been achieved thus far - i was far more interested in making new plays for the future.
For me that was where the real action was at. It didn't matter to me where they were now, (that was somebody elses game). I was much more interested in helping them to maneuvour the ship into much more profitable waters and i didn't care how i got there. I didn't think about being in the box, above or below the box. In fact i didn't even see a box at all. All i saw was a place where we needed to get to and when we got there - i'd be thinking of the next amazing place to get to.
I don't see a box, because there is no box.
There is only the next best place to get to!

Well I decided to throw something together. I gotta say, I spent a lot more time thinking about this short piece than I thought I would! Great idea for a contest oldenstylehats and good luck to everyone who entered...hopefully some members will benefit from the thoughts shared in the thread.
Education is something that I strongly believe in. It is one of the few things in life that can't be taken away from you. Once you realize how educating yourself impacts your life, it usually drives you to learn more and more about everything around you. Education evolves your thought process and opens your mind up to new ideas that you might not have considered in the past. For that reason, Black Hat has been another form of formal education for me.
Many would love to go straight from high school to some high paying career but obviously that can't happen. A freshman (grade 9) student couldn't jump from a high school class to a university program and expect to succeed, let alone start a career. Much like a noob can't go from knowing nothing about the basics of HTML, the Internet, consumer behaviour, marketing and life in general to using Black Hat concepts to improve their life. They have to pay their dues and train their minds to fully understand the information being offered to them. Is that saying that a noob couldn't implement a few techniques and succeed? Of course not! Some techniques are very simple in nature and some are just so well laid out that anyone could follow the instructions.
Like any education you receive, you can apply it in any area of your life as you see fit. And as the people who truly study BH know, it isn't always about being shady or ripping people off, it is more about bypassing a roadblock rather than stopping at it and turning around. You make the very best out of every bad situation you are faced with which instantly puts you ahead of the majority of your competition. The key though is applying your knowledge while continuing to educate yourself. Otherwise, you become a professional student who never benefits from what they have learned.
