Blackhat VS Whitehat

Ok my site is new and is bouncing around Google like a crazy ball. Should I wait a while before trying blackhat?

Make sure you diversify everything when doing SEO on a website. Also make sure to include both
white hat and black hat methods. I think anyone in their right mind would agree grey hat is best
for right now.

Just make sure to build links slowly and the dancing will calm down

whitehat is for long term and blackhat for more fast results but not very unsafe

White Hat would cost way to much to effectively do when your competing with places like Amazon.
Black Hat mixed in makes it affordable and doable for many. I think this is what I was trying to say

Clueless !!!! Like General Lee said " theres no such thing as whitehat " when it comes down to it.

I find it funny though that buying for links is banned and has been for ages yet buying position through adwords is perfectly fine

To a degree that's true - some of the "white-hat" techniques can easily be automated. Does that then make them "black" or "grey"?

Personally, I think people should stop caring about the colour of a hat and look more at a) what a user would want and b) what Google would expect from a website.

White Hat isn't the "absence of marketing and sensible link making" No one makes a penny in any market internet based or NOT without marketing.
White Hat is more about not spamming, not stealing ideas, not cloaking, link spamming, click spamming, project hijacking...

Making a sensible number of links and promoting your site is what everyone does. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Walmart, Tescos...EVERYONE

There is not real definition of WH or BH - but some things are definitely White Hat - and sensible linking is definitely White Hat, social intereaction is defintely white hat, getting good content and taking care of your site is defintely White Hat.

Some things are definitely Black Hat - Cloaking and click spamming are definitely Black Hat

Most everything in between is a matter of judgement, context and scale and could fall into either camp depending on how it is executed.

Even then every site requires a slightly different approach. Some benefit from a little BH - some don't.

As Scritty said, *some* things are whitehat, but that is an increasingly blurry line. Google can come up tomorrow and say any link building—sensible or otherwise—is a no go. Whether your definition of blackhat/whitehat changes or not, it will certainly impact what thousands other think of it.

If anything is obviously blackhat, you will know. Cloaking, hiding text, changing webpage based on referrer, etc. are all things that will fall into the blackhat bucket.

They do now really - but without links you will fail.
You can look at this as a "Catch 22" or think about this sensibly.
As soon as you realize that it's not about gaming massive quantities of links - it's about following the "linking patterns of successful sites" then you are on the right track.
