What is the major difference between black and white hat SEO? Also which is most beneficial for a website to get rank and traffic.

just spam your sites with as much links as possible, that is the best whitehat technique i have ever used.
 
Blackhat is basically creating your own links to make google think others are sharing your links. White hat is letting your quality content do the talking.

Grey hat is the best way to go. Use blackhat to promote and let white hat roll in naturally after you have ranked.
 
whitehat and blackhat sites suffered from BIG G updates so it doesn't matter what your using blackhat or whitehat
 
Basically with white hat all you're allowed to do is on page SEO and getting backlinks the "natural" way. Blackhat, anything goes.

In terms of actual SEO, there really isn't much difference as the lines are more or less totally blurred.

These days, the whole blackhat/whitehat thing is pretty much just church. You tend to hang around people from your church and donate/pay membership fee's to your respective church leaders.. and those other guys from the other board? Yeah, we hate those guys.
 
There is no such thing as white hat SEO in my opinion, and black hat SEO is dangerous and risky if not done with caution. I was doing link exchanges a couple years ago at a SEO company I worked at, which was considered white hat SEO by the boss, however big G does not encourage link exchanges. The only white hat SEO technique I see is quality content that attracts natural links, but that's hard to achieve especially with a non-authority website. That being said grey hat is the way to go.

There is no one definition for white hat or black hat, its all just shades of grey.
