You should only attempt any black hat if you have a really good understanding of all the techniques otherwise you will damage your site - for instance, if I said avoid KW stuffing if you do not really understand it in the 1st place how do you really know if you have done it or may end up doing too few KW so still harm your prospects.
But if you going to meddle in the dark arts early - stay away from link farms - KW Stuffing - buying links (unless you know what to look for in a good link) basically do lot more learning

Use blackhat lightly or not at all or your site will crash and burn. It can work well though, depending on the type of website and keyword. If you learn how to utilize blackhat methods, you could be able to use them more. Have a mixture of both, grayhat. All depends on site.
