That is so untrue. For example, submitting your website to website directories is not considered blackhat...matt cutts has explained in a video that link building is not considered as spam/black hat.

Don't go extremely blackhat as it is very risky, and not long term.
Don't go extremely whitehat as it will take ages to build up a good, profitable business.
Go greyhat, so you're sure that you're in the business for the long run and will make your mark pretty fast!

For long run i prefer white hat. But BH is useful there anyway.
