Abolish the debt potentially, finally get the amero/global currency in motion aka govcoin. Those are a few things that come to mind.
I honestly hope that I'm wrong as I do hold a nice stake of btc/alts so I want to see nothing but success. Just tossing out a semi biased/opinionated view on where this could potentially go.
I believe that for a government the process will be a lot more complicated than for a team of enthusiasts.
First, because there is a conflict of interests. The government will want to own the "printing machine" and have a full control over transactions. The people who switched to Bitcoins on the other hand will want the total opposite.
Second, because official release of new cryptocurrency will devalue the dollar and shatter the banking system. The banks are not ready to deal with cryptocurrencies on a major scale, and I'm not sure they will ever be, because there is no business model I can think about that will benefit both the banks and the users.
The initiative will most likely come from the bottom and not from the top, i.e. things like Auroracoin will spread slowly and will start to dominate on local markets.
