Bing using sandbox also?

I noticed new sites take around 3 months to gain SOME traction in bing now too and really fly post 6 months.

I guess age plays a part in both Google and Bing/Yahoo these days?

I’ve been doing/learning SEO since 2012. I’ve always heard that website age plays a role in ranking. Even today there’s people that say website age is a factor. Like if your website is < 1 year old you can’t outrank a website that is 20 years old. I’ve never experienced this. I’ve outranked Wikipedia, ehow and other old, established, powerful brands on low comp informational queries with websites only a couple months old many times. So that is an SEO myth, in my own experience.

how do you usually kick off a new site to rank in a few months without getting slapped for heavy link building?

i noticed this too... very random..

multiple sites launched same day, very similar content.......some index 100+ pages and rank in 2 months

others stuck at single digit index and not rank over 4 months

I do keyword research, topic research, (which I have worked hard over the years to perfect into a system). I generate long form content from my research, in topic clusters/silos (whatever you prefer to call it) with heavy, relevant, contextual internal linking. I do have normal social profiles. I do some normal backlinking I’ve been doing for a long time. Brand name anchors etc.

so strong eat and topical authority with strong interlinking.

as far as external backlinks, how soon after launch do you wait to build these out and at what velocity?

I’ve never noticed velocity to be a ranking factor. I also don’t blast links like 2014 parasite SEO lol It really comes down to are those links going to index on their own or not. I’ll do about 10 links a day on websites I don’t own and watch for indexing (if I own them I just submit to GSC and the pages index obviously so less link building) 1 out of 10 pages will typically index on its own. That’s just my strategy. It works for me in the early days for low comp long tail informational stuff.
