google may have killed altavista quite easily, but no-one ever "altavista'd" anything. the internet usage in that time has skyrocketed (maybe 1000 times - too busy to look it up. And all those new users "google" for what they need.

they always have and they always will.

That may be so, but google only became a verb because at the time, it was superior to all other engines. At the rate that google is moving, they are quickly becoming a less effective option. I've spent quite a bit of time searching through google today, and you would be amazed at how much absolute junk content is coming up on the first page. I've ran across many parked domains and blank blogs. They are willing to cut off their nose to spite their face. They are cutting out all of the sites that are geared to make cash (even sites that have great content to go along with their adsense or affiliate links) in favor of sites that haven't over optimized. Well obviously, anyone with a great site that has the potential to make money is going to do everything they can to grab conversions; which in this day and age includes optimizing for search engines. In short, if google doesn't want over optimized sites, then the quality of the engine will drop.

If Coca-Cola started using sewage water and replaced salt for sugar in their formula, people would stop buying. Here in the south Coke is a synonym for all soda, but people still wouldn't drink it if it tasted like shit.

You might not believe it, but I actually pushed myself to use google in 2008. Before that I was faithful to Yahoo. Back in the days, I considered google results as spams. I was never happy about them. But then my sister started saying how it was far better than Yahoo. So I just switched.

I have two concentrations from Business Admin and I can tell you every business class talks about power of "words of mouth". Bing is great. At least it shows sites relevant to typed keywords. Now Google is refusing to do that. So it is about time when they should lose their market share. Just because people are comfortable with something does not necessarily mean they are loyal to it.

It is possible to influence their choice through "psychological warfare". Start saying "bing it" and people will pick it up.

you didn't think much before posting this did you? Why on earth people would use altavista back then? They dont have that good result. And now look at what google is doing? Tell me how good this search result today? They doing and going the other way away from which makes them a success.

Uh... WE used Altavista way back then (now known as the 'dark ages') because it was the best tool available at the time. It was THE best search engine, by far.

Currently we use Google for the same reason, it's been the best tool by far. If that changes, we will no longer be 'Googling' something. Are we at that point? Probably not. Yes, it's annoying that G changes their algos and our sites dance or flop (most of mine actually rose a couple of spots) - but the question is do you see any outrage from the consumers because they're not finding the results that they're looking for? If not, then you're just blowing smoke in the wind. Frustration by the consumers will signal a possible change - not us.
 
Anyone remember Cuil, the Google killer? :p From memory it had the potential to overthrow Google, but it was short changed by the crappy search results.

Looking back on the Cuil Wikipedia page I see something of interest.

Not sure why everybody is so excited about Bing. I switched to Bing a week ago, and found that I'm not able to find relevant results. Bing's index is much smaller than this of Google, so if you're looking for something that is not part of modern culture you most likely wouldn't find it.

I used Blekko as well, every 3rd query it gives me "Server is overloaded, unable to process your request."

Don't get me wrong, Google sucks, mostly because its inconsistent and tries to guess what you're trying to find (unsuccessfully I might add).

But before you ask me to create a MEME, give me a REAL alternative. :-)
 
G isnt going anywhere, Bing directly copies the results from them. It's time you faced the reality.
 
BTW - I asked my wife who is not a computer professional if she had used Google in the last couple of days - she had a few times. I asked her if she had noticed any changes and she mentioned 'the zipper'. I asked her if she noticed anything different about the results - she hadn't.

We notice the errors - the 1-2 empty websites that suddenly jump to the top, the consumers really don't. If there were alot more 'errors' then the consumers would probably notice but so far I haven't seen that many errors.
 
Haha most people don't even know what Bing is.
But I do agree, someone needs to take google down!
 
He was dropped on his head when he was little. I agree it sounds cooler to bing it then google it but that isn't going to change shit.
 
I read that now Bing results are looking more relevant than Google's.
Bing "Google updates its search filtering algorithm, targets SEO violators".:cool:

For me, Bing works. I use their webmaster tools.
