After initally rejecting Microsoft's takeover bid, Yahoo and Bing have formed and alliance - Bing providing the search technology and Yahoo the advertising technoloy. Together the two hope to be able to compete against Google.

What does this mean for SEOs?

Since Bing and Yahoo take up 28% of the US market together, perhaps it's worth spending a little more time learning how to optimise for Bing.

Could be really nice so we doesn't need to optimize for 3 search engines and only for 2 to cover the search engine market

Actually stop and think about it for a minute.

    1) The ONLY search engine that provides fairly accurate backlink figures is Yahoo - Microsoft stopped doing it at all a year ago.

    2) The Microsoft spider bot never goes below the second tier from the home page - Yahoo is way better.

So that leaves us with Google for ALL of our detailed search engine data (Bing looks nice but it's a crock when it comes to any proper search) and absolutely NO meaningful link data going forward.

    Very bad news.

not for the harder keywords, to be honest they seem to be pretty good at punishments on blatant spam more so than google...

i agree 2 engines to target instead of 3 seems nicer...

Also bings engine seems to spider just fine as long as your sites layout isnt insane.

I will agree that Microsoft's link data isnt as full as siteexplorer which sucks truely, but maybe yahoo will port that to the microsoft data for their users...

"google for DETAILED SEARCH DATA?!?) besides that adword tool which isnt what we were getting from yahoo (we were getting backlink data)... i hate to tell you but when it comes to detailed backlink data, the MS backlink data (linkdomain: etc) and the msn webmaster tools, provide way more backlink data than google ever did. hopefully yahoo will maintain their api and explorer.

its likely much will stay the same really considering part of the deal is that yahoo will remain the same basically, just the backend queries will be sent to bing instead of yahoo's engine, so technically site explorer etc might be maintained...

all of this is moot at the moment considering the change over is set for completion 24 months AFTER they get federal approval which will also add a good bit of time onto that. so we're looking at 24-36 months probably

Bing is really an attractive site. But it is not quite good as google. Google is really fast and reliable in service. Yahoo is running well on advertising too. Hope both of them bing and yahoo will make a good combination.

I think Microsoft is trying to work more with SEOs. The addin for excel is really good, although it would be better if it were Google's data.

Bing is so easy to dominate. I can't wait. If you want help dominating bing, just look up MSN Loophole.

Bing is a new search engine. Don't compare it with google at this point of time. Perhaps 4-5 years later who knows what is going to happen. Don't just seo your website for google. Do it for 3 search engines.

Bing clearly has no way of telling good links from bad links. All of my sites which grow too fast from comment spam get sandboxed by Google. However, I hold position 1 or position 2 in bing for such competitive keywords as "discount vouchers" and stuff like that.

Bing responds to brute force spamdexing, and Yahoo isn't much smarter. I, and many others, are hoping that these more forgiving search engines steal at least some of the market away from Google.

I doubt they will take over google though as number one (like they think they are going to lol) Never will the term 'google it' be replaced by 'Bing it'
