Hello,

At the time of creating bing ads, when setting the bid amount, there is option to select first page bid and use the suggested bid. But if I went with custom bid myself, later on if I want the bing to suggest the bid for first page bid, I don't see that option, how would I know how much I need to bid to show on first page, anyone notice this problem?

Thanks

you can always create a new campaign to see what the suggested bid amount would be.

On this same topic. How do I know what I should bid? Is their suggested bid usually a good indication or will I be able to get away with less? or is it usually going to cost me more?

They suggest a price, but dont really explain why they suggest that price. Sometimes they suggest lower bids for keywords with more searches. I dont really understand it :p

The price is suggested based on the bids. If more advertisers bid and also if the bid amount increases then the suggested bid will also increase. It's not based on the amount of searches!

well I realize that, but generally if something is searched more often, wont that give you more chances to have your ad seen, therefore better? I mean I realize 'How to milk a cow' is not going to be better than 'Buy cows now!', but if the keywords are similar but one has 10x the searches, isnt it inherently better?

If the bid you are using at any time is below the first page bid, you'll get a yellow exclamation mark next to it which would show the suggested bid if you click on it.

In addition, you can keep track of the positions achieved by looking at the avg pos column. If it is below 3, you should increase your bid.

Kind of a follow-on question to OP's question. How many keywords are we recommended to start out with on a campaign's first test trial? Broad or exact? Assuming the user is a noobie on PPC.

Also, back to OP's question, is the flow of setting the optimal bid something like this: starts out with a lower bid than the front page suggested, then adjust up accordingly to avg pos and/or impressions (if bid too low, then imp. = 0)?

To answer your first question, I would use broad modifier and exact match. If you just leave the KWs on broad you will get numerous irrelevant clicks. Which is a waste of money, obviously.

I would recommend you starting with the Max CPC you are willing to pay and then adjust it as you see results.

There is no problem. Suggested Bid is the best. If you make it your self your ad cant be showed.

What do you mean by "broad modifier"? I do see broad, phrase, and exact options, but no broad modifier. Did you mean selecting exact, but in the settings page select to allow different tenses etc?

You can select the custom value for your bid, and you can also get the first page, mainline bid,etc whenever you want it.

Go to "Keywords"
On the left -side top (just above Avg. CPC) you can see "columns".
Click it... there you can see the est. first page bid, mainline bid, and best position bid options.
Add them to the current columns. From then onwards you can see that data in keywords.

Broad modifier means... something between "Broad" and "Phrase" matches.

ex:

Broad = women shoes
Broad modifier= +women+shoes
phrase= "women shoes"
Exact = [women shoes]

When you add "+" before the keywords in broad modifier, that means the search query must contain those keywords in order to trigger your ad.
