Right so my server was having issues this morning so I backed up my wordpress blog e.g. comments, links, posts etc into a single XML file.

I actually reinstalled wordpress and now I want to import the xml file, the only problem is I can't lool.

I've tried under wp-admin, the plugins and tools I have don't seem to work, for instance the actual only xml tool that would work is live journal, but I don't think so... also the wordpress thing doesn't work says it only does WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) files.

Someone told me I could SQL dump it although I don't really understand what that means, I'd just like to do it through wordpress tbh, is there a xml plugin I could use?

    thanks

SQL dump: export your database into a file and import the file in other blog. Is easy to to wiht phpMyAdmin.
A export plugin I don't know if exists because is not very useful because Wordpress already have the export/import function.

umm if you deleted your old wordpress database then an SQL dump is useless at this point. what format is the current XML file in..if its not an extended wordpress XML then you might be screwed.

never did it your way, but have used the MySQL dump on multiple occasions, works fine... True though, that would have to be done PRIOR TO the deletion of the DB.

One of my hosts in the UK on a shared hosting package, backs-up my sites monthly.

Of course we should all be backing up more regulary, it may allow you to at least get the majority of site backup as I suspect you never backed up using myphpadmin.
