food for thought...

i was doing some seo research and i came up on this site ... this site gets about 50,000 daily unique visitors ... heres the kicker the site which is more than 5 years old has over 300,000 yes three hundred thousand pages of unique content .. yea a freakin ton of content... but they have less than 4,000 inbound links listed in bigG ... and at least 2/3 of those are from non unique sites so theres really only like 1200 unique domains linking in ... traffic travis gave the page a d- for seo ... some of the folks here talk about huge backlink blasts bigger than that in a single day ...

so it seems like content is king.. if this site can get this big with no seo ( effectivly just make it and the backlinks came naturaly) would it make sense to spend as much or more effort on content than just seo ?

Content is a part of SEO.

But yes - it's always a good idea to use a lot of time on building a quality site with unique content. A site that users actually link to, because they like it are worth a lot.

Most people are just lazy and try to pick the easy way, but there is no such thing. There is a few things you can semiautomate and a few tricks to increase your SERP's. But nothing beats hard work, in the long run.

If it was all about the number of backlinks, everyone who has bought scrapebox would have a #1 ranked site. SEO is far more in depth than the amount of links you have. In fact, in my experience the number of links you have is far less valuable than other SEO factors.

What you write here about is something I have spotted a long time ago... Once the site is super big (that means 5000 pages or more), and these pages are mostly articles and the site has some age, the site will rank very very well for tons of keywords.

And it doesn't matter so much what the quality of the content is.
Seems the size is important somewhere. Or maybe everywhere? LOL

Like they say, content is king. If you build a site with massive content that readers will enjoy then they will link your site for you. I think that the most important part of building a site is having as many links pointed at your site as possible. With enough content I feel that this is possible with little seo at all. Its just alot of work to create that much content.

Good content is a prerequisite. You cannot run a site profitably in the long run if you don't have content. With link building, on site seo like keyword density, h1 tags, internal links, images, alt tag you can cheat the search engines for some and milk them.. but it won't last long. The best way to rank at the top for a long time is through fresh and unique and useful content. Anything can be unique, but it has to be useful as well.

300k unique content pages getting only 4k backlinks from 1.2k unique domains? This is what you get from whitehat SEO and google just wants us to do that? Long live Black hats...

Woohoo, a question I can answer! (raises hand)

To put some perspective on this, Google takes deep-linking and linking diversity into account. This means if you have a site with say 100 pages, but each of them are well linked on the web creating relevance to a keyphrase - then pages on that domain will be far more optimized for a keyword.

A site with 300k pages would require some significant link building to properly deep-link to key pages. The internal structure of a 300k page site would likely be pretty crazy unless it was properly planned out, organized and submitted with a dynamic sitemap.

Not only will Google take link diversity into account, but they will definitely take link age and other factors into account - such as how many links are built over time. If you build links too quickly with little relevance or authority - then the links are worth a lot less than a site which has built them steadily over time.

So the skinny of it is: links vs. content is an irrelevant comparison because they each need to be taken into context with their related industry, keywords and site structures/size/age.

Hope that helps! Cheers :)

There is no such an easy way, content is seo vital part. We cant expect from a wild card since search engine alogarithm like google always surprise us, as ppl know, buyer will come back if you give best service/content.

It is also important the link quality, 1200 domains with ******** links on important pages will do a lot more than 1 million links in nofollow comments on secondary pages from not related countries.

Former Google employee? LOL...:)

Plus rep for the post

Hey teenie,

Definetly not a former Google employee ;) I've been working for a great company though doing some higher level (whitehat) SEO for the past few years. After dealing with a few thousand penalties you learn a couple tricks. That said, all my knowledge/experience is in whitehat and geared at longevity, and less in virality. I'm stoked to be here at BHW learning BH from the pros!

If anyone has questions relating to seo with large ecommerce sites/ect. I'm always happy to brainstorm with you!

Cheers,
Kris
