Big autorithy site: is it worth it?

I'm planning on working on a big autorithy site with a small team, I know big sites tend to rank harder specially at their initial stages, but still i'd like to hear your opinions.

We're currently looking to talk pretty much about a huge variation of keywords: food, technology, pets, motor, health.. we know this is a very hard task and involves a lot of resources (content, brand work, and a lot of patience) but we're good on it and we're all ok on the fact that it has to be worked for a long amount of time.

For the example, lets assume that we're talking about "tips on buying"

"Tips on buying health products"
"Tips on buying technology" (computers, games, cameras..)
"Tips on buying..."

Do you think we will get always outranked by health/technology niche sites, or at some point (after a lot of time and brand working) we will have enough autorithy to outrank niches on certain keywords?

We surely discarded working on niches, because we all got our own self smaller projects and we're just willing to work on something really big that keeps all of us busy.

As you said. It's harder to start, but in the long run I think it will pay off.

Also, you have to be more careful with the link building, because is not a niche to churn and burn.

Since we dont care for a long road, the only linkbuilding we're willing to do is paid guest posting on high autorithy press sites. We aint doing that untill we have, at least, 200 published articles.

I think the search engines love big sites with high engagements - engagements on your blog as well as on social media (more mentions, the more attention you will get). High engagements show that your site has something that is attracting the visitors, and thus, more attention and priority (and hence authority) would be given to your site in the process. I doubt it's hard to make a big authority site hard to rank - but I think it's more of like it's hard to make a big authority site instead.

Sounds like a good long term business. I would recommend.

In my opinion, you go a bit too far with the plan.
There are several super-strong websites like you describe (combination of many niches on one site). There aren't going anywhere, Google loves them, they have lot of authority etc. Here we speak about websites that have 5,000+ articles (some have 50K+ ...), and a big team of in-house writers.

What I would suggest you is to pick just ONE big niche (pets or cars or food), or even just a sub-niche in this big niche (dogs, motorcycles, vegan-food), and make an authority site around that topic (200-2000 articles).
Such sites (if done right) can still beat the super-big websites in SERPs, becasue google see them as more thematic, and gives them edge.

Im sorry to break your dreams but whatever way you choose without very big budget for content, links you will probably fail..

Sorry to break it to you dude, but if you're planning a long-term generic English-based website, you're probably gonna lose more money along the way than you'll ever make. If it's a different language, then that's a whole different thing.

These niches are very competitive; hence, I'd suggest you go with just one if you don't have enough resources or workforce. Don't go big with low budget and start expecting miracle. Start small!

Dont, pick a sub niche. Will give you a much much higher ROI. You cant compete with sites covering topics that broad. It's impossible unless you have 50+ writers. And your willing to spend 10s of thousands. You might rank a lot eventually, but you wont get the ROI you looking for IMO.

You should focus on one niche. For example, food or pets.

Don't be an eHow type of site. You won't be able to compete with more specialized niche sites and you won't be able to compete with generalized sites like eHow and Hubpages unless you have a massive budget with many writers.
