i've recently been learning how to play guitar. been playing about 3 months now. I've mainly used Youtube videos to teach myself.

what are some easy beginner songs I can learn that will help me advance?

My first guitar lesson was called "Fingers Are Horses & Frets Are Stalls" (True Story).

Cheers! - "Wiz"

my first guitar lesson was called nothing else matters metallica.
fyi : just the intro hehehe

very cool guys :)

I've mainly been teaching myself to play covers of songs from bands Sublime, Hank Williams Sr., The Eagles, The Deftones, Greenday, RATM, anything old school Blues sounding, Incubus, NOFX, etc.

Just wondering what I should be teaching myself. Maybe just simple 3 chord songs.

I really really really hate barre chords!! grr cant seem to get them right yet.

When you can play like this like I can 24 years give me a bell
After the passion all that time the guitar becomes a third arm

I used to have hair like this

Im so sad I ever left the punk era and early 80s
You think you got had a shit life like I personally do right now and its only financial look at Jason here in the vid poor kid
The only way to get good is practice and practice and develop your own technique.
ALL the good players learned themselves.
Today you have Youtube lessons from stars when I did it I had to read music books and turn by hand my vinyl record to slow it down to hear the fast notes slower.
Today you got it good

IT all started for me in 1983 when Malmsteen (neoclassical metal) and Jason here were stars
THis is only ONE of TWO passions I have in life other is game inventing ut got nowhere with that

Try out some rock and roll songs, do you have an electric guitar or the normal one??

Have you ever seen Orianthi? That chick can
shred with the best of them.

Here's a video she did with Steve Vai

Now go home and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE :)

Do Guitar Hero bad-asses count? if so count me in.

I wish I could learn how to play..

Learning to play nowadays is so much easier because of all of the Tab sites on the Internet. When I was learning you had to learn by ear or go buy the book, now I will hear a song in my head and be playing it in 5 minutes.

Looking at your list of bands I would say that learning GreenDay is the easiest. Deftones would be practically impossible for a beginner with all of there tunings, etc,(But they are my favorite band so you have good taste.)

I would recommend starting off with some Nirvana if they are your cup of tea. Their songs consist of only a few chords and whatever bar chords are used you can just use an open chord instead.

Hit me up with a PM if you have any questions.

Hi There! My 14 yr old son started guitar recently and has been taking lessons for 8 mnths. He practices constantly! I tried adding the YouTube links to his first recitals so you could hear his songs but I haven't been a member long enough and can't. Sorry! :-( If you search YouTube for Connor Payne, he is the second video right now...it's called Connor Payne - Revival at Sticky Fingers. I'm posting it because it's a good fun song you might enjoy but quite challenging. Good luck and practice! Lessons are a good idea! My son self-teaches a lot too on the computer but nothing compares to his lessons. :-)

I've been playing for ten years and I can recommend you to start with easy songs because if you go for the harder ones, you will get discouraged.

When I first started playing, I remember playing 'taking care of business' by BTO all the time! It's a great song though it's pretty easy

Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent. Very easy to play and sounds cool on an electric.

You can always buy smaller guitars or if you adjust the "action" on the guitar it may help. The "action" if too tight makes it harder to do bar chords, etc. If you get it adjusted it may help.

Or maybe you need the guitar that Michael j. Fox used in Back To The Future?

Cool

Let him play if its his passion
I agree with Math182

Start easy chords
I started with The Beatles
I used to be so obesessed when first learning I couldnt play a first fret C chord and I taped my fingers to the guitar overnight in C chord fashion for a week Yeah I slept with a guitar LOL

I learned way back in the 60's with a teacher, and records! They had records back then...had to keep picking up the needle to replay.

You're all set with the internet now, but what you really need to do is learn EVERY chord on the neck.....do that for a year, then learn the leads, etc.

My 2 cents :D
