Best programmers in my opinion are the one's that make the most efficient and optimized code without all the advanced extra lines that those super smart graduates write. And no everyone can't be a good coder it takes some intelligence and logic that some may lack and will struggle to get in their head.

In the same way as everything else, you need to
have a passion for programming, or at the very
least, a sincere interest in it. I don't think that
everyone has the aptitude for it.

I dont think anyone can be good at programming. Apart from dedication, programming requires a lot of thought and logic and not everyone has that.

Wiz and Jazzc beat me to it.

Anyone can do anything they want with the right mentality and motivation, BUT if you don't find programming interesting then you're going to have trouble learning because you'll just be bored

Take this for example: I tried to learn the basics of SEO a few months ago, but I couldn't grasp even the basic principles. But I learned a whole new programming language less than a week ago.

    jazz is right....Dedication....and good Habits.
You can learn just about anything with the above.

Wiz is also right....some have more of an aptitude more than others.

Most good programmers learned to do it before they were 20 years old, and most of the rest learned to do it in the 80s. If you aren't naturally attracted to this sort of thing, you will most likely achieve mediocre results.

That being said, most programming being done is mediocre programming because that's all that most projects require anyway.

    I know I can't. I hate it.

Mind you, all I ever did was a little COBOL and Fortran in 1972, in school, but I knew from that effort that writing code requires something I do not have. It is duller than watching paint dry, and about as as rewarding as sticking your head in a fire ant mound.

I manage to limp along with HTML/CSS, but if I had to sit and write code everyday, I would fall asleep, tumble out of my chair, and break my skull (and consider that the better part of my day).

If you have an interest, and discipline, and attention to detail to the point of almost being anal-retentive, its probably easy.

Personally, I would rather take an electric drill and bore holes in my teeth with no anesthetic.

Like any other profession, there are certain individuals who will excel in
programming, while others simply do not have the necessary qualities
to become even a mediocre programmer.

Believe me.. its just ur mindset. I am a programmer myself. Coding from past 4 years. Started coding when i was 13. If you believe that ur good, you will be good. If you think your no match to others then off course your internal brain will not work.

To some degree I'd say yes, but it does sure help if you are naturally intelligent and a logical thinker from the get go.

I voted No. Not everyone has a passion to code, not everyone can code for a long time, you need a passion. If people say you can be whatever you wanna be, thats not true. Everyone wants to be a millionaire, what do they do to become one of them? Not too much, the same is a good programmer you can code, but to be the good one is the same as millionaire you will need to dedicate more than one day.

You thinking about it all wrong friend, to be a good programmer will not and wont happened in 10,000 hours.
maybe it will happen in more than that by a lot, let say 2X or maybe all u need is 5,000.
it is all about your ability to stay focus, stay on target. not reading every hour, 10 posts how to make money coding or things like that and not jumping from coding script to another
and u need to love it or u have dedication
if u have that maybe 1 day u will
but dont waste ur time asking, if someone could be a good programmer, just do it, it is hard but not impossible, people did it before u and will do it after u

p.s: i voted no because u mentioned hours + u asking the wrong question

You can be whoever you want. That's cool.
You can be also programmer if you want, but being good/skilled programmer, you have to have certain assumptions (and this is something you cannot learn in school or so).

Why do you need to learn programming, especially from scratch? Writing copy, and networking are far far more important than writing some code where you can outsource someone for cheap. And yes, everyone can be good at it, but what's the point?

I used to be a programmer earlier and I have to say that not everyone can be a good programmer. You got to have a passion for it plus you should be able to think logically. In my experience, even in software companies very few people are good programmers; most people merely do copy/paste work. True programmers always strive to write shortest and most efficient code; something that is not followed by a vast majority of software professionals. Plus nowadays there are front-end tools available for most software platforms which has further reduced the need to learn and follow good programming practices. I'm sorry to sound so pessimistic but I've been in the industry for many years so I had to share my experience.
