Ive been trying to rank #1 for a VERY competitve niche now for quite a while.Im absoloutly killing the #1 site in terms of backlinks, and on-site seo.

I have 8k links(with Pr5,PR6,PR7 backlinks, domain is 2+ years old), I have more IP diversity, more high pr backlinks(#1 site has no backlinks above PR3), more back links altogether, Higher Authority(OpenSiteExplorer), and im still stuck on the top of page 2.

Anyone ever had any similar experiences?

Content wise is it better in terms of seo?
Is your anchor of your backlink using this specific keyword. (Anchors are one of the factors that allows google to rank for that keyword)

Content Wise - I have a 400+ word article on the main page. This an ecommerce niche, most of the "Content" on the main page is product listings.

In my backlinking ive used this anchor about 75% of the time(same ratio as #1)

Your links probably looks manipulative in Google's eyes, and the site that is number 1 probably looks MORE natural.

Google is shockingly good at determining if a link profile is natural.

You are probably doing too much, therefore devaluing your links. Also link to inned pages.

#2 is still pretty damn good and you oughta be seeing some decent traffic from it for your keyword(s)

My linking activities have been very conservative.

I dont buy into the whole "maniputive looking links" theory(unless your link is on a page full of viagra and cialis spam).

Even, if that theory is correct and google has the computing power to determine definatvly if a link is "manipulative", The #1 spot has nothing but "manipulative" looking links, nothing but articles and paid links from blog networks.

I appreciate all the theories guys.Keep em coming!

One 400 page wont do shit dude,

Get a ton of PLR rewrite them and post 1 article to your blog everyday, then Bookmark and deep link to them, one a day for the net 20 days and you will be seeing decent movement.

TheTRUTH, I have had these experiences in the past.
The problem was all my liks were concentrated usually on 2-3 platforms. Like SB blasts and XR profiles. I diversified the platforms from whcih i got backlinks and that helped considerably.

I have not cross tested this against any other site, so it might be a coincidence, but I think it does matter.

Tell that to #1 spot..300 word article on main page, the rest is product pages(no descriptions on main page).Same as me.My density is slightly higher depending on the day(different homepage promotion)

My link sources so far have been ScrapeBox,Manual High PR Blog Comments, and articles. My recent PR7 addition did not even make a dent in the rankings.

Comp source is: Articles, and Articles(from paid blog network)

I do believe this is the most plausible theory so far though, I would say a vast majority of my links come from blog comments(manual and automated included).

To any posters posting additional theories: Don't let this post influence your reply, Im looking to get as many unbiased theories on this as possible.

Yes I understand that, however he is in number 1 and you're not, so you are going to have to do something a little special to beat him...

just because he did it with (I am taking a guess) a 14 foot long single page blablablab sales pitch that I F*#$&G despise doesn't mean that you can do the same and beat him...

Thanks for the input. I've tried larger articles and they made no difference in rankings.Started with 400 word article, got my current ranking, expanded to a 1000 word article, rankings remained the same.I trimmed it back down 400(a 1000 word article on an eCommerce homepage is a little bit overwhelming).

Tried that experiment multiple times with the same results.:(

how many low pr rank links do you have? are all of your links no follow?
speaking from experience having only high pr links and only do follow links can bite you in the ass. try going after some lower quality links. and make sure you have nofollow links in the mix.

Links aren't everything. In fact, I would say they are becoming less important.

Clickthrough counts. People sometimes ask why it's so hard to beat an official site for it's own brand name search. The answer is really simple - 95%+ of people searching for that brand name are going to click on the official site. Google knows this.

Is the other page's title/description snippet more attractive than yours? Take a look at the serps and try to objectively ask yourself which site you would click on based on the title/description.

Adjust your meta description and (if possible/needed) - your title to make a more attractive click magnet. If you need ideas for this see my method here:

    http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...-huge-increase-search-click-through-rate.html

    Good luck.

Maybe you competitors domain age? I'm not sure how much impact that would have though. However that is the reason why I am #2 in one case.
