BHW 17 Years Ago!! Back On 2006

Were there character restrictions to the topics at that time?

Oh blog systems... how i love thee... let me count the ways.

Oh, no...

These types of threads always attract those with rose-tinted lenses, so I'm just going to post all their trite comments before they do.
  • "Man, the forum was so much better back then!"
  • "Those were the days, when real black hatters were here, shootin' the shit!
  • "IRC FTW"
  • The REAL BLACK Hat World. It should be called White Hat World now, LOL!"
  • The forum was way more active back then. I remember a posting a thread and getting 5 million responses, it was insane".
  • "Why can't the forum be like it was in 2008! God, I hate what this place has turned into! Why am I even here still? I'm so angry that progress has been made and time has not stood still for me!"
  • "Progress has not been made! If anything, the forum has gone backwards! You don't understand, @Zwielicht!"
  • "You are aware of what the forum has turned into, yet you fail to do anything about it, solitary administrator! You and your corruption are part of the problem, and my anarchy is part of the solution. (Insert Immortal Technique-esque buzzwords here)".
But to get back on topic, that old logo was really something else. It was back when the logo made this place look like a flasher forum..
Wonder what was on the "Nice & terrible websites" ??
I was not aware that was ever a category on BHW. Let me see what information I can dig up about it.

I finished looking into it.

It's not even archived on BHW, possibly because it was removed well before I joined BHW. However, you can find a link to the subforum on archive.org.

The URL structure for BHW was different back then, but the thread IDs shown on archive.org still work as well! Here are the threads from the screenshot above.

lol the badger site still exists. Hilarious. So many sites come and gone over the years and it's still going strong.

Every community follows the trends and situation in the industry/hobby the community is about. I don't envy I wasn't part of it back then, although it's interesting to look back to it. But that's all there is to it.

People will be blackhating now, same as they did, same they will.

People say that it was easier back in the day, but was it really?

Yes. SEO was very simple. More links rank better. Exact match anchor text only.

What's easier depends on your definition of 'easier' and what method you're talking about.

For me, I had a YouTube channel back in 2010 that was quite popular. I simply uploaded videos and I would promote the channel just by commenting on similar videos to offer advice and talk with others. I also used to create a bunch of "villain" accounts to argue with my main account on various YouTube videos. The villain accounts would post the most utterly ridiculous, yet believable enough responses where I could make myself look reasonable and knowledgeable. People would see this and subscribe to my channel because they liked what I had to say. It was a very effective tactic, and I had somewhere in the neighbourhood of 20,000 genuine subscribers before I deleted the YouTube account. It's not a lot by today's standards, but it was a lot back then, and I had quite a bit of local notoriety as well for the topic of my channel. Of course, all of this was back when YouTube sorted comments by the most recent ones, and the auto-moderation wasn't as heavy as it is now. I wouldn't even bother using most of those old tactics these days.

Overall though, I found that low effort tactics between 2010 and 2014 were much easier to discover and make money with than they are now. There are still low effort tactics you can use to generate a profit, although I don't search them out like I used to.
