at cloudflare level, I've blocked Ahrefs. I've an account with them, and my site verified. But the poor Ahrefs bot cannot crawl my site, its links, or monitor keywords. So my competitors, even if paying $1000 or $90 or $5000 a month the Ahrefs customer will not get any data belonging to my site or get broken data from past 5 years (where I didn't block their IP, bot and any suspicious crawl activity then). This is good if you own a PBN which you can control who can peep inside your incoming and outgoing links. Blocking Ahrefs so their value diminishes. And once client comes to know they can't get full and real data from Ahrefs, they'll stop paying them!

People are acutally spending on Ahrefs, Majestic, or SEmrush, etc. type of services that provide half-baked data to their clients.

you can leave them if you don't like , but we all know that ahrefs is #1 tool or backlink analysis :(

It's not about leaving or staying, it's about exposing shody customer service and not letting companies get away with treating people like this.

At this stage, if they refund me, I will donate the $1000 to a children's charity and post the proof publicly. I couldn't care less about the money, what I do care about is companies taking the piss.

Same...the fact that with 100$ / month subscription you can't see and export the outgoing links for a single website is disgusting.

With currently plans, you even have to even pay for each keystroke you do in the search box.
 
They just seem to want mega agencies now. They started going downhill when they started promoting Charles Floate lol
 
Emm, You could smell their scammibg scheme since converting to the credit system. It's absurd.

And I disagree with everyone saying best crawler. In the past yes. But now semrush is on the par if not better.

I have always said, its a great time for a start up company in this field. The technology is already well known and the customers are hungry

I believe from usage pov, ahrefs is now Useless!!

There's some fantastic alternatives.

SpyFu is *really* good. Their keywords at least are coming back the same as ahrefs and they cost like $400/year. Plus they give you UNLIMITED exports. I tested this and exported ranking keywords for nytimes.com. While I didn't get the whole 30 million, I got 500,000 which is impressive.

I've sadly realized dataforseo.com's keyword data is not what I thought. It's an api to the adwords keyword tool. Not ranking keywords for a page. They're still a great company and have great data/pricing for other stuff though.

serper.dev is the cheapest for serp data in case anyone is interested.

And the best I've found for getting keyword data for ranking pages is serpstat.com.

They work out at $0.25 per 1000 keywords, but they offer bulk deals so I should be able to get cheaper. Spyfu btw are $0.50 per 1000 keywords. Not bad also.

But $0.25 is decent. That's 1 million keywords for $250. That's plenty of data for machine learning.

I will check this tool always saw this in group buys but never tried it personally.

Yup, I love Spyfu as well. It's data is accurate just not as big as Ahrefs/Semrush. BTW, semrush database is better than Ahrefs. And their Keyword Magic Tool is Magnificent. However, they are expensive, not greedy like Ahrefs but they love money. So, on huge scale, I think they will ask for an arm and leg as well.

For your use case, I think SpyFu is the best available option. Somewhere middle between database size and fair price. But again, they s*** for competition analysis and backlink studying. So, wouldn't recommend it to normal Joe's on the forum trying to build his website and make a living from it.

Just a note to lurkers in the forum, SplishSplash here is working on huge scale as he either working on his clients websites which are often big clients or feeding his AI project with data. So, he needs those in Millions. As a starter you don't need that much.

Semrush Groupbuy for $9 is everything you will probably need and even more.

True, using Ahrefs becoming a huge headache now a days with day to day updates making it difficult to use.
 
Similar thing happened to me except they have refunded normally. Did you purchased as a company or private person? Not sure that it makes any difference though.

Thanks to Tim Soulo for getting in touch on LinkedIn, everything has been sorted out and I've been issued a refund. He's also going to make sure a good refund policy is implemented throughout the company to protect against situations like this.

Hats off to Tim for taking responsibility for this and sorting it out. This shows that the leadership at Ahrefs is in good hands, and for me it's restored faith in the company.

As I promised I'm going to donate the entire $1000 to a children's charity. I just need to decide on a good one. If anyone has any suggestions please share here and I'll post the donation proof once done. I hate drama, so I wanted something good to come from this. I appreciate the support from everyone.
 
Actually, you probably used the API wrong. Ahrefs API request is 50 Credits base cost, and each returned field is 1 credit.
So basically you should be able to pull for example 50 Keywords for 100 Credits (50 base credits + 50 * 1 Credit), or 100 Keywords for 150 Credits etc.
You probably did not limit fields in response, that's why it was so expensive.
Try using the "select" parameter to only get the "keyword" column

That would be really hilarious since I emailed my enterprise team rep with my concerns about the costs and explained to him that it seems crazy that it's going to cost me 50k-60k credits per 1000 keywords.

His response wasn't to educate me on how to lower the API costs, but instead told me to do a manual export and use the 10M manual export credits.

Oh well.

I use the API myself, and this is how the calc works. getting 1500 Keywords for one page costs 1550 credits if you only get the keyword column. It's not unusual that the enterprise teams do not understand their API, often they are not programmers. However, still not great, ahrefs should have people there who know how this stuff works...
