Better to have specific keywords or lots?

Curious about on site SEO. The title pretty much says it all! Should I have a few meta tags/keywords that I am trying to rank for or put my main ones and a bunch of other related tags?

If you're talking meta keywords, don't use them at all. Google doesn't even factor those in.

Really? Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology. The tags that you make on a word press post...
 
On each page you should optimize for one main keyword and then include a bunch of other keywords to focus the topic of the page and to provide you with chances to get long tail traffic.

For a site, you should always be targeting lots of keywords (on your different pages) - don't put all your eggs in one basket.
 
better to have lots in my oppinion as well. It doesn't matter if its a low competition keyword, even if there is just 30 searches a month, sometimes these keywords can be the best - depending on how specific those keywords are to what you are trying to offer / sell.

It's not a good idea to stuff to many because Google can penalise your website for it. I would suggest to minimize them perhaps 5-6 max.
 
On each post, you will want to focus on one main keyword and add its LSIs kws. It will be fine.
 
I am familiar that meta keywords should not be used... and am ok with the idea that you should use several keywords.... my question is...

should your densest keyword phrase be a keyword that you are personally trying to be #1 for, or your most competitive keyword in your list of target phrases... for example

if i want to rank #1 for local guitar lessons, should i have a more dense and focused meta and content approach for local guitar lessons, or should i try and rank for music teacher a more competitive word with more hits that still kinda relevant to my site?

is there some sort of system to this?

I agree, 5-6 keywords on a page is more than enough, but you could diversify your keywords throughout your website. I wouldn't just use 5-6 keywords for one whole site.

Yep, you would need to use between 5-6 related meta keywords to each page. Keyword stuffing is common and can result in penalization. Create fresh content apply your main keyword to each page within the content, don't over use it however, you can determine this by simply downloading some of the free SEO tools, they will feed you back your onpage SEO results.

This is what I explained in my post, see below, il explain a little better exactly what I mean

this means that; if you want to rank for music teacher, it will be hard work and yes you'll receive a lot more traffic. But some will be looking for flute teachers, piano, drums. You are offering guitar lessons. You have to think about the conversion rate of the keyword as well, how many people will definitely need your services. Won't be very good if you are south of the country, I'm north of the country and I need guitar lessons. So a great conversion keyword would be 'Guitar lessons up North' of course there will be less people but you know you'll have a good conversion of them.

I would still recommend ranking for music teacher if you can, just target those conversion keywords!

Yeah, adding lots of keywords to your page is such an awful idea. :rolleyes:

Just one example I happened to look at about 30 seconds ago: #7 for "download incendiary" http://www.formspring.me/rinteoce

Autumn said it all.Try optimizing each page with the targeted keyword all with those keywords which you are trying to rank.targeting more keywords helps enhancing the earning for sure specially if you are going for Adsence.
For Home page optimization try putting all the targeted keywords.
But recently while I am going through various sites I can see a remarkable things.My team have mentioned this in our BST eralier as well.Now the things is that if we are trying to rank two pages for the same keyword for example Homepage and an inner page then the inner page is getting more preferance then the Home page and although we are trying to rank the homepage the inner page is getting the boost.Nothing can be concluded right now but can only be expected as some new update by Big G.
 
I always prefer to enter all possible keywords for post. Its been working for me till date. Maybe I am not gud at identifying main keyword so i am going for general ones. lol.
 
get your self an IBP copy and analyse each page you will learn that way how to optimize :)
