Namecheap is good, but not cheap (~10$ and their coupons are not generous).

I looked to various options today, and I didn't find anything cheaper than godaddy (sorry).

They offer ~1$ registrations, but with strings attached. Renewal will be expensive and you can only get one or a few domains at that price for a given account. They have a few competitors such as 1and1.com, but with about the same constraints.

I was thinking of a little robot that would create a new account, use a coupon, register a domain, sell it, close the account :)

However, the best option would be to be more selective in choosing what domains to acquire, so that the cost of registration becomes marginal.

    Plus one for namecheap.

Not the cheapest, but it's just great service and they stuck to their initial promise to offer simple service, real humans and they simply don't bug you.

It was a relief for me leaving godaddy and using namecheap 3 or 4 years ago and never went back.
