I have been using Avada recently but I get around 4-5 seconds of speeds even after using speed optimization plugins. I'm not familiar with any programming . Any pagebuilders and themes you would suggest , I'm looking at elementor with Astra these days and I'm not very pleased with their templates .

My aim is to create small websites under an hour for local businesses

Thread moved.

Elementor is great, easy to use and if you have a good eye for design makes it easy to design pretty much anything you want. Don't know about their templates though never used

And also; I found the same thing - Avada is one of the best themes I’ve found in terms flexibility and design but I also noticed it’s pretty slow.

I'm using elementor with Astra, but you need other extensions for elementor, it's not astra`s fault.

Yeah Avada has very bad performance (same as most big "multi purpose" themes)! on whatever sites I can I use the Zeen theme from Themeforest these days. Its performance is perfect. I get high 95+ scores and 1-2 seconds loading time with ONLY W3 Total cache set up and optimized images using TINYJPG site. Its design is on a different level to avada, etc and it also comes with a unique builder that kicks elementor/ divi builder/ avada builder's butt. The only reason I don't mind naming it is because its so flexible that every site made with it looks so unique so your site won't ever look like mine.

Missed the part your said "small local business" :P Zeen can do beautiful one page landing pages, but overall its mostly for magazine/blog/shop/news/dynamic content kind of sites so depends on each project if its a good fit or not.

I'm saying pre-made templates of Avada are better than Astra

I have to agree. Avada do have some of the nicest templates I have seen. Their page builder also has a rich set of features and design options. But there's no denying that its extremely slow compared to other themes.

Exactly what are your current loading speeds and which plugins are you using

Just ran a speed test with gtmetrix and got 4.8 second load time. I am using mostly the standard plugins that come with the theme with the addition of "WP Rocket" and "Post/Page specific custom CSS" plugins.

I am just running EWWW.IO image optimization on the site now, then I will retest with gtmetrix and see if there is any improvement.

Avada is the best for me and you can optimize it better, just follow suggestions from GT Metrix, but you need to consider your hosting provider too if you are getting grade score 90+, and speed is 3.5+ sec.

Get Avada + WP Rocket Plugin (from BHW) and you are pretty much set!

After optimizing images with EWWW.IO I reduced the load time to 4.5 seconds and the scores on GTMetrix are now - PageSpeed: A (99%) and YSlow: A (90%). Total page size: 1.61MB and Requests: 41.

Try to install the Lazy Load plugin from WP Rocket, it's free. This helped me to boost my loading time.

p.s. if you didn't

I would recommend you use generate press premium [you can check Deleted member 752298, that guy is amazing]+ elementor. In my opinion it’s your best option right now.
