That sentence and your title are two totally different things.
I don't really have a favorite, I use different ones for every project and I just check what is available, is up to date and have good reviews. Although I use one plugin on pretty much all my sites which is WP super cache.

I usually pay for them as I don't trust nulled plugins. Plus someone worked to make the plugins. Only right to pay if you can afford to. If I do download a free one from a trusted source and i like it, I always go and pay for a legit copy after.
