What are some techniques you guys use for building backlinks? My website is a website you can watch simpson episodes on for free (I embedded links I found throughout the web)

Any ideas / suggestions?

You could start with fan pages and forums in this area :)
 
It's gonna be hard building legit links to this kind of content. I have no idea how you'd get organic links for this. Wouldn't most people go to youtube or something to watch simpsons?

Think about making good quality videos or change your niche.Concentrate on On page optimization instead thinking building links.
Platform (on page optimization) has to be laid very strong, then only you can think about getting backlinks.

For the quality links the best way is guest blogging, or link exchange with some relevant websites. Direct messages sometimes work, if you find the right words or make an interesting offer
 
Depends on your ROI, but start with competitors research. Seems hard to believe any legit site will link to you. Try to get users from social media, but think twice about investing too much in your site as it can be taken down due to DMCA violation at any time.
 
Following your logic you can embed any movie or cartoon on your site ? It does not work like that.
