Best way to share files between two computers?

I have a desktop and a laptop where I will be doing the same work on.

Every time a specific type of work has been done, I want to update an excel file that is now located on the computer.

I want to share this excel file between the two machines. So when the laptop updates it, it gets updated at the computer. You get the picture.

I've been thinking about OneNote or OneDrive. But I'm not sure if it's the most effective and secure options. I assume Dropbox and the like are a bit risky? The files I'll be sharing will contain sensitive data.

Any suggestions? Using a USB stick would be too ineffective.

You can use Dropbox or GDrive and Sync both PC's. Work in the cloud and everything is done automatically

"I assume Dropbox and the like are a bit risky? The files I'll be sharing will contain sensitive data." - not at all, just use a strong password and 2FA for your accounts. Even big companies use these kinds of software.

You can use google sheets for that,
so basically you'll be able to update the data from there and save it directly to the cloud
as far as your google account is secured (enable 2fa), you're good to go

Maybe I need to re-think my view of these cloud services. I always imagined they were quite insecure.

Why gdrive and whatever? No need for that.

Just do a local network and share folders. 100x faster than any online solution.

connect both pc on to the same network. than done you only need to copy and past, or just ope directly from other pc

Windows Network Homegroup! Must be within the same same network. Just share a folder in the desktop you created to the other pc within the same network. No more waiting to upload on google drive or onedrive. It's instant.

Checkout anydesk or get your public ip and connect via inbuilt RDP connect. Go to Networks-Internet Settings and turn on file sharing. Or download xender for Windows. All these are much quicker than online storage.

Agree with both of these.

For sharing between the staff we use google sheets only because you can see when someone is editing (you both cant over-write each others work, well you can but it's not exactly easily done) as it shows the different people editing the lines etc. We have (touch wood) never had a problem with the files getting accessed (no doubt google is creaming over our internal data) but I'm the admin, staff are users with access only and they can't share with anyone else.

For local we have a hot shared folder. There is a networked external drive that only has local access* for laptops and desktops, myself and the other user share and swap files there.

*You can configure these to have remote access which can be handy so if you are ever out or working remote and need to access a file you can connect remotely.

I will definitely set up shared folders in the network. No idea why I didn't think of that before. I was pretty locked in on OneNote, as that's what we mainly used at my previous company. But network sharing is probably much more convenient.

We already smoked Marlboro, drank cheap whisky and shared folders back then in Netware and Windows for Workgroups

Window work groups... god thats a blast from the past, then a new guy would join the office and the entire day would be written off trying to get his PC to find and connect to the existing network.

Oh you want that printer to print as well? Forget about it.

Haha yeah. It's like when something isnt working properly and you open up the whole computer to reseat components - only to realize it was a cable at the back that was loose.

always encrypt your data before send them to cloud or any services ,
at latest use zip password (strong password)

then you can use any share services, like Dropbox or GDrive ,....
so even if you account got hacked or something ,they can't easily access to them .
