Try to see if there are any forums in your niche that you could get involved with. I've used forums to answer questions that people ask, and then I point them to my site for more information. The key is to actually be helpful and leave good information. You also need to be consistent and post quite a bit.
If you have a budget you could also purchase Adwords or Facebook ads to drive some quick traffic to get things started. Just be careful to limit your daily budget so you don't blow through it!

Forums are usually a good way to get some initial traffic trickling in. After you have a few visitors coming in consistently every day, you can try and build a presence on social media, and it would also give you enough time to do SEO just right.
A lot of it depends on the market too though - you have to take a look at the channels that are the most accessible.

Get high PR pages linking back to your site, this is one of the most important aspects of SEO these days.
Why? because google knows that anyone can get a crappy bookmarking link, whereas it's much harder to find and obtain links on relevant websites and pages, with a good PR

You can build a ton of social media profiles and be actively engaged in the sites. Posting in related forums also helps if you're just looking for direct traffic.
