One of my clients websites has just been hacked. Host gator only have a back up from a few days ago so I am fucked and need to create this website from scratch again.

whats the best way to backup wp sites totally? If it's a plugin is there any good tutorials. I used a plugin in the past and it didn't back the sites up correctly.

Best plugin i have used for WP backups is called BackupBuddy. Great thing about this plugin is that you can easily migrate website to a new domain.

It is easy to backup WordPress site manually if you have cPanel. You can zip files using file manager and download it. After that just download database and you are done.

    That backup buddy is expensive.

In cpanel what files and folders should I be downloading?

You should download everything on public_html folder. Remember to show hidden files so you don`t miss .htaccess file.

This is how I generate a WP backup.

    - Go to the tools section in the admin Dashboard and click Export. Save this file somewhere relevant
    - Go into MySQL and back up the WP database.
    - Login through FTP (I go with FileZilla) and copy the entire installation onto your hard drive.
    - Save the location and that's it.

Exactly, I've never used the WP Backup plugin. I've always backed it up in the steps I listed above.

I use BackWPup plugin because sometime have problem with ISP and using Filezilla.

Plugins are PHP-based, which is an inefficient and unreliable way to get backups. These plugins, via PHP, attempt to communicate with the server in a way that most secure Linux servers won't allow or make very difficult ... because a hacker could do the same thing. So I suggest to you that Personal Backups is the way because it have the peace of mind of daily backups that are stored separately from their live site files

cPanel also has a "backup and send via FTP" feature, which has proven useful on a few of my clients sites in the past.

It backs up the whole public_html directory and all SQL databases, sticks them into a .zip file, and sends the file to your own FTP server, where you can keep it safe.
