Windows 10 defender + Malwarebytes free + when is needed use useful software from bleepingcomputer site like AdwCleaner, ComboFix, Junkware Removal Tool etc.
For Linux/MAC I recommend ClamAV (free and open-source).
Don't use paid antivirus software, they sells your data and all of the big antivirus software like kaspersky bitdefender etc. are made by guys from secret service.

Probably it's not that bad, it's just that it's not as popular as once it was. I remember my first PC came pre-installed with Norton Internet Security ~20 years ago. The only thing i couldn't forget about it to this day, that it was a resource hog.
