What's the best virus protection software out there these days? Norton? Malwarebytes? Some other one?

Windows Firwall+Windows Defender is good enough to protect your system.

For extra protection from ransomware, adware and malware you can use Malwarebytes or Bitdefender total security.

i was using windows defender, but earlier this year, due to a windows 10 update, it turned into a resource hogging application. i switched to avast. much less resource intensive than windows 10 defender.

ESET NOD32 for always running AV. If you want a scanner, Malwarebytes.

As someone else suggested windows defender + malware byte. Both are free. Plus free malware byte chrome extensions for realtime internet surfing protection.
Don't know what if you are mac user.

nod32, hands down. Have been using them for over 5 years. I haven't been hacked ever after that. With the software, you will also need common sense though. Basically, don't open softwares like "paypal money generator" and so on, on your machines. Don't download fishy stuffs. If you absolutely have to, use a linux PC; that will decrease the risk a bit (but linux can be hacked too).

You are the Best Antivirus of your own devices. Don't visit/download sketchy stuffs online.
Or run those softwares in VM/VPS if you're having doubts.
Yupp. However, do remember that these softwares CAN detect if you are in a sandboxed environment. A virus might not do anything when it's in such an environment, but when you use it on your main pc, it will. So, don't trust the result in a VM, too.

Windows 10 features are more than enough if you know what you are doing.
