If you are looking for a lot of effects, almost unlimited montage potential is good to learn Adobe After Effects/Premier. The simplest i think is Sony Vegas Pro/Camtasia which are good too.
wonder share flmora is probably the best for beginners and also you can use all the features in trial. convert trial to registered, first block hosts for flmora in your host file(windows/mac/inux) by forwarding it to 127.0.0.1 ,then disconnect internet and enter free email id and regis key- could be found on yt. and voila bada bing bada bang
If i need to do basic editing (like cutting or overlays) and convert a lot on linux enviroment (eg ubuntu based vps) i use Shotcut and I can tell you it is not that bad (it is free)
One of my favorites is Adobe Premier CC!! Really fast render speed!! And the workflow is amazing, lots of tutorials on youtube, you should search for Peter McKinnon and you will be amazed by this software
