Can you guys recommend the best tool you use to check your website's competition? I reckon I would listen to what you have to say first before I make my choice on what to buy.. I have only tried traffic travis though..

Market Samurai to get domain age, # of on site pages, amount of backlinks and reffering domains for those backlinks.

As far as researching their most concentrated keywords and where their backlinks are coming from and having those backlinks sorted by lets say PR, Alexa etc, so that I can see which ones are the top ones to get backlink from to my sites. I'm using software that we wrote for our internal use only, which we made available public few weeks ago http://www.ibacklinkpro.com

Spyglass from SEO Powersuite has always been amazing.

There is a free trial version with limited features so you can safely test before buying so you can get the general gist of it.

You shouldnt neglect the paid services, such as Semrush, Spyfu or Keywordspy. These tools are more widely implement a keyword search and research competitors It is worth it if you're seriously doing your job.

I use Market Samurai too.

However, I find that once you learn the "metrics" for judging competition, I don't need MS to rank competition for keywords. I can judge my competition via basic SERPS and the SEO Quake plug-in, and visual inspection of their website.

Download the free version of Traffic Travis.
Traffic Travis lets me find out how old the site is, what the PR is, were its listed, and how many backlinks it has. It can do just about everything a paid program can.

Traffic Travis is ok, really good at checking on page seo!

I use Yahoo siteexplorer in conjunction with SEOMOz

YSE used to be the best tool for me, but now it is not working at all anymore. Yahoo said they will stop this service and it seems they did it about 10 days ago :( I see only old baclinks, no new are added anymore.

I have tried TrafficTravis and see just about 30% of backlinks that YSE is still showing - i dont believe in that tool. Really dont know what to use now...

Who knows maybe not having a reliable competitor spying tool is a good thing especially if you are ranking highly for a profitable keyword.

Even if you aren't maybe just copying a competitor links stops yo from working to get better links elsewhere...

But i dont use it to spy for competitors backlinks but to check if there is any chance to rank for a particular kw.

For example now, i am nr 2 for a 90k exact kw. I know that nr 1 has just few backlinks more so i know there is a chance to take his place :) If i would see he has 10k quality backlinks, i would say kiss me goodbye...

edit: i just checked yet again and i am already nr 1 for my kw :-D Just to share a small success of mine...

If you have a budget, then Market Samurai.

If not, then use Traffic Travis (free version), or SEO Quake and ahrefs [full stop c0m]
