Depending on your site, Press Release is a bump in the traffic. If you sell an product PR is the best.
 
Those techniques you mentioned here is old now..The best is Private Blogs which is in PR 7 and above.You get good results from edu and gov site links.

yaa all these techniques are really very effective for increasing traffic to site. but i prefer forum posting most.
 
I would like to go with the blogging and press release. Creating a good blog of a very good PR will definitely help in increasing the traffic. Commenting over the blogs which have .edu or .org or .gov domains will greatly increase the domain and page authority of your website or a webpage, along with the PR.
 
I agree with blog commenting.. one of the easiest methods but it consumes a lot of time though. Joining in a forum is also a good way.
 
If you are using good high volume/low competition keywords you can get traffic from most of the major article directories or press release sites.

While private blogs do work, the ones mentioned by the OP still work just as solid now, if not better than they did years ago...if you know how to use them properly.

With the social networking age boom, everything is relative to the people's interest, as it always has been on the internet. It is just more obvious these days as people interact more freely here and less formal and rightfully so, more skeptical to typical spamming techniques and portal redirect traps.

In whitehat marketing, that entire list still works across the board. You may want to research and re-evaluate how those resources work presently. You may be presently surprized.
