Just wondering what is the best software to format and create a kindle book. I'm using word to type it, and I want to add a few graphics, so I'm wondering whats the best way to do that, and preview as if I had a kindle?

Google Amazon Kindle Previewer

You're doing OK by creating in MS word. The best way to add graphics in Word is the normal way. Insert>Picture. Add a caption if required and then you're good to go. Note that for best results start your book in word, then save it as HTML. Re-open the HTM file in word and use that instead of a .doc or .docx file - less formatting screwups that way. Also note that to avoid multiple refunds of your finished Kindle book, you need to put in a table of contents at the front which requires the use of "styles" in MS Word.

You can upload your finished HTML or Word. doc to Kindle, but junk formatting remains which may negatively impact your kindle book. For this reason I create in Word as HTML and then convert to .mobi (Kindle file format) in Calibre. This allows me to preview the kindle file AFTER it's been converted and then make any changes before uploading to kindle (which takes a full day to process on their end). It also allows me to import the kindle file onto my phone and ipad for previewing in the Kindle app. Remember - more people read kindle books on an IOS or Android device than they do on a Kindle reader.

Good luck.

PS - I had a whole bunch of Kindle creation links ready to go for you - everything from software previewers for different devices to MS Word tutorials showing how to use styles and HTML for Kindle creation for a professional-looking Kindle book and more, but BHW considers such links to be spam and wouldn't let me post them. As a consequence, you miss out on some awesome, freely given tips and tricks for Kindle. That's too bad and so sad. Blame whoever decided I couldn't post links.
