Best social networking platform to start site on?

Hey, I thought about starting a social site a while ago and also looked at boonex. However I did further research and would stay away from them. I got the impression they try and nickle and dime you for everything, their service sucks and a lot of things I heard people were yelling "SCAM", so just thought I would let you know.
I would check out something like Buddy Press/. buddy press would be good because its based of wordpress and there are ALOT of talented wordpress developers out there that can help you customize your site the way you needed it and for a good price.
