Use any company you want - some are better than others but most are fine for newbies.

Personally I use Namecheap for domains and Site5 for hosting. There are plenty of others that are perfectly adequate though.
 
Godaddy for both or Namecheap for both. I like to keep it easy when it comes to changing domain settings.

What is the current opinion on this subject? My hosting and a few domains are expiring and I don't want to deal with godaddy anymore.

And yeah for domain i vouch for namecheap they are really good.
 
Godaddy for domains and Hostgator does the hosting thing pretty well- hard to beat their support, prices and server performance.
 
It's up to preference, I'm sure you will be hearing quite a lot of answers. I personally use namecheap for domain and hostgator for hosting.

If you are doing PBN's you should mix different domain registrars.
