ScrapeBox - swiss army knife of SEO
MagicSubmitter - does everything SENukeX does (and more) plus 50% cheaper
    SpinChimp - article spinning
    TrafficTravis - analyzing competition
    GKT - analyzing keyword

I would also recommend Market Samurai for your keyword research, and also finding domain names.

I would go with scrapebox because I rank all my sites with that alone.

Since your a beginner , I think you need to find out more about SEO before you get into tools. The most important part of SEO is keywords and content .Like you mentioned above Market Sumarai is used for keyword research but theirs other free solution's you can choose from like googles keyword research tool and i think Rank Tracker has a free version that's ok . Next is link building ,tools like scrape box , Xrumer and magic submitter can help and hurt you at the same time so learn how to use them before you just go blasting sites .The difference between them is scrape box is used for blog comments , XRumer is used for forum profiles and magic submitter is used for web 2.0's . But again before you go buying all these tool find out which one will help you out the most learn to master it and move on.

If you can efficiently use 'em then renting a vps pre-loaded with tools is a good idea.

Is there a general consensus as to which keyword research software is the best one?

The most important tool you'll ever need: YOUR BRAIN.
Those tools are used to automate processes (forum posting, blog commenting, etc.). If you don't know what you're doing, you'll en d up frustrated and disappointed, regardless of the tools you use.

Seriously....if you want to learn to make money on the internet; if you want to learn to rank sites. The formula is pretty simple. Buy one piece of software(scrapebox, magic submitter, or Xrumer) and LEARN how to use it thoroughly. I mean it. It will take tiime to learn it but once you do, you will suddenly realize you are now more knowledgable than most of the marketers out there. When you're done with one, move on to the next one. If you learn how to use these 3, I'd bet you'd be in the top 5% of all marketers. If it were me, and I had to do it all over again, I'd buy Xrumer and just concentrate on it till I was a master at it.
