I am planning of turning a large site into a much smaller one. I want to redirect the pages that I will be getting rid of to a newer site on a different domain in the same niche instead of deleting them as I have build many back-links to these pages. Is this how it is normally done?

Thanks

Yes, you 301 the pages, and you might wanna change the url on the backlink pages where possible.

The 301 will be from the old site to a new domain. What would I be doing with the url of the backlink page?

I was talking about changing the url of your backlinks to your new domain url on as many backlink pages as possible.

gotcha. Makes sense. Thanks

Thanks so without the same structure I would have to do them separately

Hey,

When you do the transfer I would definitely recommend for you to 301 redirect the pages. Now the real trick is keeping the URL structure the same on the new domain and website so that the redirect actually helps the new pages by notifying Google that the domain has changed.
