Best Platform For A Silo Based Authority Site

That has nothing to do with silos. It's extremely difficult to create a real silo and there are no public wordpress plugins that allow you to create one.

I know of almost no one who actually understands seo siloing. Most people think they do, but they don't. Study bruce clay's siloing guide.

Free wordpress silo plugins that are fault-free are very rare - I've never seen one

I know of two vendors of wordpress silo plugins that work fine (including me)

I regard myself as a SEO siloing expert, having been doing it for about 5 years

There's a very long thread on this forum about siloing:
http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...-wordpress-silo-sites-using-free-plugins.html

Several times in that thread I recommend visiting bruceclay.com and themezoom.com for technical info about siloing best practices

Siloing has nothing to do with conserving page rank. That's called page rank sculpting and it's an outdated technique.

Siloing is about creating super strong pockets of relevancy on your site ...

If you think of pagerank and theme as being interchangeable terms, then it is still relevant

Siloing is about creating themes within a site by linking like-pages to like-pages, but not connecting unlike-pages to unlike-pages

All "normal" CMS and site-builder softwares link all pages together - which is the very opposite of siloing

Difficult how? Whats leaking juice? Use pages instead of posts, that takes care of 90% of your issues. Then you can use widget logic plugin to show/hide relevant or non relevant links.

You're right - you can do it with widget logic plugin - however, each site is then a custom job, as you have no automation

I did in fact put up a demo silo site using the widget logic plugin - but the site broke after about 6 months - not sure if it was a wordpress version update or not, but anyway it broke and I deleted the site

I disagree with splishnsplash. Creating a silo is relatively easy, but you can't do it right from the dashboard. You're going to have to customize your theme by editing the raw PHP files.

Homepage links to each category. Each category has a couple of posts related to the category.

Posts in each category link to the other posts in that category, the category page, and the home page.

Posts do not link to posts in other categories. Posts do not link to other category pages. Categories do not link to other categories.

The above is correct - however, categories can link to other categories - but they don't have to

Whether you link the categories together or not is a matter of personal preference - both ways are correct as far as siloing is concerned - it's just one of the 16 different variations of siloing a CMS

The end result is hubs of relevant information linking to each other, their parent category page, and the homepage. If you interlink within categories, then it's completely useless.

Only if the site is unfocussed!

If you have a site about TV's, sat navs, toaster ovens, etc. then yes it would be useless as the categories are not related

If however, you have a site about asthma, then Asthma Symptoms, Asthma Inhalers, Asthma Treatment, Asthma Cough, etc. are all highly related, and linking them together makes sense and flows the theme across the site - but you don't have to link the silo landing pages together if you don't want to - I do, but it isn't wrong not to link them

Wordpress in nature isn't the problem.. It's the themes introducing leaks .. And people wanting to add plugins like related posts that break the silo feature [...] Really any cms can silo given the time.. But if you want to take a themeforest theme and make it silo easily in Wordpress then forget it... Those themes leak links like crazy and have so many widgets that break the silo [...]
I don't think you understand what silos are. Wordpress in nature is entirely the problem. Do you understand that on the cats category page, you can't display a link to the dogs category page? Wordpress by default is going to display the full menu on every page. As I said, many many people think they understand siloing, but very few do.

I'd say creditandgolfse understand more about silo then you do about wordpress (php/cms/coding).
You're saying it's not possible to use wp as silo because of the default settings wp use? Right..

Now you've pissed me off!

I'm the partner he referred to - and we have 3 commercial silo wordpress plugin/theme packages on the market

We've also got a siloing PHP script, as yet unreleased to the public

Mike is a professional web developer/programmer - it's what he does for a living - and he programmed our siloing products

If you want to talk siloing expertise, bring it on

Any tips on where to start coding the php script?

There's a guy who sells a plugin+theme for Wordpress, he's from BHW. If you want to take a look, here's the website:
Code:
siloplugin.com

Edit: I've just seen WebDev has answered you already, he's one of the owners. My opinion, he has done a great job with the theme and plugin, you obviously refuse to see that silos can be made in WP.
Personally, I've seen a couple of silo sites made in WP, no leaky links at all.

Honestly, it does not matter what platform you use to build a silo site - just as long as you "fix" the core problem - which is that "normal" CMS and site-builder softwares link all the site pages together, rather than letting you link selected pages together

Wordpress was an obvious choice for us, due to its popularity - but we were originally going to release a PHP silo site script - what changed our minds was the fact that there is a wordpress plugin that changes wordpress sites to static HTML - so we thought a PHP silo site script was a bit redundant

If we get good feedback about people willing to purchase a PHP siloing script, we'll release it

Drupal and Jumla could be used, but they don't have the user base that wordpress has, so we decided not to write a silo plugin for those platforms

Back to wordpress - a silo plugin that "hooks" into the wordpress core can be used - or a dedicated theme can be created, where the actual siloing code is built into the theme - we have both, but have not released the themes with built-in code to the public yet

Other people have used widget-logic plugin, custom menus, wordpress core hacks, etc. - as long as it works, they're all equally good - but we like "repeatability" - i.e. not having to program each site as one-offs

as I said.. I understand silo's quite well.. wordpress is not the problem.. its how you use it.. sure leaving the default wordpress output will not silo.. but its all in HOW you USE the tool..

a carpenter is not going to build a furniture piece by cutting down a 4x8 piece of plywood using a jigsaw.. he's going to use a proper circular saw with a track guide or table saw to rip the pieces down to the size he needs..

again its HOW you use wordpress.. it takes like two seconds to go into the widgets and remove the default wp widgets.. like does anyone really even leave the "meta" section on any wordpress they use.. no.. but its "default".. cant think straight out the box and hope the tool works magic for you.. you gotta make it work

That's solid advice about the category pages. Makes perfect sense.

I mean leak as in the page rank juice leaks out by external links wordpress might have. Thanks for the reply :D
You can customize wp in any way you want.

Conserving your pr is very old thing and losing link juice is not a issue , the issue is how you are loosing it and to whom you are loosing it.

Wikipedia is biggest example which shows that shows you can loose as much link juice as you want (they have 100+ internal links in every page. ) and their is no subpage no parent page every thing is just under Wikipedia.org/wiki/**** .

Silo is just a hype created by some people (who want to sell their wp silo themes) ,

@ some one who is trying to promote a silo theme , do you know that you are limited to those non-user-friendly themes ?

There are many ways to do do silo. I show whole menu in top and my silo is still perfect then others using a non-user-friendly theme.

It really isn't rocket science, are you sure you're not that kid you're talking about? All I see is that you can't accept the fact that you were wrong. You were asking for a CMS, there is no CMS made for silo plugins? Did you want one that would only have 1 button "Press here to create your silo website".
And Hacking? Really? I would barely call it "adjusting it to fit your needs".
IMO, WebDev really knows his stuff about silo websites, check the demos of his product, those are silo websites made in Wordpress. He has also written a ton of information on another thread, showing how one can build a silo website without his products, using free plugins.

Exactly right

Wordpress needs a lot of help in order to silo correctly - and a couple of years ago, it couldn't be done

I'd say the only CMS that can do it natively is Drupal - and even then it's advanced stuff, beyond most amateur site builder's abilities

Everybody is entitled to their opinions

I started selling wordpress silo plugin/theme packages because people were being ripped off by marketers selling siloing solutions that did not work

The siloing niche is very small, and nobody is going to get rich in this niche

We have further siloing products ready to launch, but it's hardly worth it

I can tell you all, that Webdev's silo is working and very good indeed. I had a small old site with PA of 40, links were only made to the main url, and the inner pages were showing 0 PA. When I converted the site to silo the inner pages got PA of 20 and overall rankings increased without additional link building.
