what's the point of submitting a spun press release to a bunch of PR sites, when none of those junk sites ever sniff google news? is it for the backlinks?

I like PRWeb but it is pricey. I do think it reaches your target market quickly. The only thing I dont like about them is that they do not accept Paypal for UK, and it takes 1-2 days for the press release to be approved.

Yea, the backlinks from news sites are quite powerful.

I once did a paid PR Web release. I think it cost $80. It was for a very low competitive keyword and I had multiple page one rankings for a while. They are definitely worth using as part of a comprehensive traffic strategy. There is a pricier version which allows you to include video as well.

I believe there was a product about "press release wheels" a year or so back... maybe by Daniel Tan... I'm uncertain about that... but press releases are pretty valuable links that most people miss and you can increase the power of a press release by backlinking it as well.
