Best Onsite SEO Software

Hi,

OK time travel back - I used Web Position Gold for onsite seo back in the day (think 2003) and it did wonders for my organic rankings. Couple months after site launch I was pulling down 500+ visitors a day for my niche, was good from my pov. Travel forward in time, and WPG doesn't really exist anymore. And everything has changed. So I'm wondering this.

Is there any really good tool for onsite seo? I know the basics like H1 H2 tags, but having read a dozen or so posts on this it would seem there is more than that to it. Is there any decent tool to help out with this? Read your page, compare it to a check list or the top 10 rankings in Yahoo/Bing per say?

Any recommendations from people who have used them?

For on-site I primarily focus on having:
- File structure of page\images: primary keyword
- Meta tags: keyword in title\description
- Alt tags: obvious, related varying keywords
- Canonical tags on each page to funnel link juice\social media sharing to the page I desire

I don't like the looks of the header tags in most designs, so I simply don't utilize them the majority of the time. I don't believe bolding or italicizing keywords means shit anymore, so if it's not for emphasis or in a quote, I don't do it.


Speed optimization includes:
- Compressing files server side
- Caching files through .htaccess, especially longer durations for images\icons\css\js
- Minifying inline javascript\css (pull commonly used data from external files typically)
- Optimizing all internal images
- Specifying height\width on all images

A lot of the things you'll see is just jibber jabber about keywords here and there, and bold this and that, and that's your formula and here's your A- grade. I rather use some of those concepts and stick to the basics above before pissing around any further on-site if at all, and move on to back linking.

Thanks for the reply. I'm getting what you're saying about back linking being more important. I was of the (possibly false) belief that onsite mattered more with Yahoo/Bing than with Google, and hence I was thinking of attempting to target those two engines in particular with this technique. Am I misunderstanding this and shouldn't be worrying about the onsite as much (beyond basic) and just move on as well with the linking?

Also the reason I asked about software... I am *trying* to build an authority site. At the moment I have 100+ pages ready (400+ words each) to be dripped out (new page every 2 days) and quite honestly I don't want to try to run through this by hand. My brain is NOT capable of that lol.

Is there any software that will run those things you mentioned on a whole ton of pages?

On-site SEO should certainly be your starting point before\after content creation. It plays a big factor.

- Visual design of a site is even included in on-site SEO. If you have an unattractive site, it may not matter what content you have, people may just bounce, and this would impact your rankings.
- Content is huge, you want to retain people, you want them clicking through inner-pages, and obviously you want them re-visiting.
- Engagement, do you offer commenting, rating, or a simple "reaction" based clicking?

You'll want to ensure that each of your titles are different, as are the descriptions. If you just banged the pages out, you could have skipped this important detail.


As for software, I don't know. I'm sure there is. I doubt it's an all in one package that would just fix the issues for you automatically though. I've heard of SEO PowerSuite doing various things (typically nothing that several free online tools couldn't do I've been told, but may expedite your progress), I don't know if it's worth a shit though to be honest.

gtmetrix.com is one site I'm thoroughly impressed with though. It's just to help with speed optimization ideas, but it's free. You'll have to do it page for page, but if you have similar content for every page, you'll know where you will need to improve without running a report every time. Apparently speed, although probably not a key deciding factor, does play a role in gaining higher search ranking, and certainly assists in visitors being retained.


I hate myself for saying this, but as far as search engine(S) optimization goes, I rank for Google. Bing\Yahoo come in 2nd because of their market share, I know a top 3 spot gets me more traffic in Google then a 1st place ribbon does in Bing. I'll give it to MS though, Bing does have quality traffic for the most part, albeit a lot lower quantity from my experience. Bounce rates are lower, more click throughs\time spent on each page.

I use http://www.woorank.com/ when I'm looking at on site SEO.

Woo rank was the only one that I would consider of paying for its service on a limited time basis. It summarizes a lot of good points, I don't know if it will do multiple links if you pay for it though.

It may still have a one time per week use as well if you want to test it out on a primary page of concern.
