For any blog or for posts or articles on a wordpress site, What should be the perfect image size within an article.

Thank you.

There is not a one size fits all. The most important thing is to compress the image properly so it doesn't slow down the site. Also, keep in mind that nowadays most traffic comes from mobile devices, so it's useless to have extremely large pictures.

Yeah don't use oversized pictures and you should optimize them (webp format). The website's speed is important in the eyes of Google, check your website with pagespeed insights.

+1 for this
it really depends on the website layout and content width

It also helps to use a very fast host and a stripped down / minimalist theme
If you do go over the line in terms of image size, the factors above can offset large file sizes

I use 780x410 for the featured image. Looks perfectly in URL previews of major social networks.

For content images, I don't resize the images even if they are 10000px wide. I upload them and resize them using HTML tags with 650px width and link them to the original images.

I use ShortPixel Adaptive Images, so basically, it resizes my images on the fly according to the user's device and the size of their screen.

I think, uploading images files less than 500 Kb for best results and the image should be short in height and long in width. The bigger isn't always better, it will affect the site performance.
