depends on your project and needs. Personally I use hostgator for my VPS/Dedicated needs but their dedicated prices are outrageous I pay the price for privacy and stability. They have awesome stable shared servers for 10$ a month. I also use hostigation for my IRCd needs as hostgator does not allow it.

For start up shared use hostgator. If you get anything more than 1m hits a month skip VPS as those boxes cannot handle that traffic. Go dedicated.

My vote goes to Hostgator too! I have been using them for 5 years. Good hosting with almost 100% uptime and excellent support as well.

The price is affordable too. :)

Can you explain about your bad experience with Hostgator? Is that uptime or support, etc?

Hostgator is popular but I've never had to try it, I am perfectly happy with iPage.com and ASmallOrange.com. They're fantastic with awesome support. At least check them out, I think it would be worth it.
    Good luck!
