You can find a free version of almost any theme on this site. I like using premium themes
 
i like Weaver.Its just like the default ten20 theme but with more options and flexibility
 
I like the Elegantthemes premium WP themes, worth it! I't just $39 per year and they will release one WP premium theme every month which means that you will be getting more than 30+ premium themes plus for a small fee.
 
it depends for what use, I don't think there is really a "best" theme - most themes are the same and if you're concerned about SEO, then there are really good plugins for that like all-in-one or yoast's seo plugin
 
There's no such thing as best themes. That depends on what you are trying to accomplish. For me, if I can build a site (whatever it is) quickly, I consider it a good theme.

I am not into the prettiest design either. You can always change a theme later. But first to get the "product" out to the market and drive traffic.

With that said, I prefer Studiopress themes. They are high quality, SEO optimized and very flexible with Simple Hooks. I build authority content sites, micro niche sites, landing pages, review sites and even affiliate stores with them.
 
As for free, I really like working with the GeneratePress theme, even if I also have the paid add-ons. It´s a great theme with a lot of smart features, not just a lot of bling, bling .. =)

Plus the guy who built it, he is a super nice guy, always helpful with people, even free users. You can´t go wrong with this theme and team.
 
There are a ton of free themes in the downloads section here that I use. I find that some that are "the highest rated", are the biggest pain. Just download a few and see if the theme's layout is good for what you want.
 
The themes you mentioned about are also one of the best themes, in my view, you also have to experience "Flash" theme. Flash is the easiest, flexible, feature-rich and advanced theme. It is not enough; it comes with thorough features that premium themes have.
 
I don't think there is a "best theme". But there are appropriate themes based on your website content or how you intend your readers to go about your site. As a reader, personally, I don't really stay/read/go back to the blog because of the theme. It's more of the content. :-)
 
Lot of free themes available mostly for all niches, use the best theme which relates to your niche.;)
