I am in the process of creating a news website similar to David Ikce's and Alex Jones and was looking for a similar format theme as these where i am planning on posting news articles and informational articles. I also plan on opening a mini store in the future nothing to major. I was wondering do you guys know of any free platforms out there and themes likes this i can use just out the box? I know wordpress exists but was looking for others? David Ickes seems like a bespoke package?

you can try bootstrap free templates, they are easily customized and have variety if formats/designs
 
just buy one if you value your time and don't live in a third world country. The customisations, plugins, responsiveness layout will more then make up for something that's costs under $100.

There are pretty enough advanced free website builders. With their help you can build your website and it will be free. Check web builders list on WebBuildersGuide

the guy asking for wordpress theme that sound like the sites he post
just wanna comment that Alex Jones yes nice clean theme, but David Ikce theme ugly spammy worth a 1 cent
but Alex Jones i have seen something like it in themeforest dot net search there
 
A good and easy to use html editor is Kompozer. Recommended for beginners. It's a very good program and easy to use.
 
Free Themes are not good as compare to premium theme, some free themes are better but you add many plugins manually like quick view.
 
free html website templates are packed with clean code and design. templates such as landed, alpha, help hand and abele are avail for free.
 
Free will never get you to your target. Better get started with a premium theme.
 
Try graphicriver, it's not free but have a lot of good themes that you can buy at very reasonable prices
