What's the best FREE tool for competition research? Backlinks, how much traffic they get for a certain keyword etc. etc.

Does something like this even exist for free? Or at least on a one-payment basis, I'd invest in a tool given that I don't have to fork over money on a monthly basis.

Well, an easy way to check competition is installing moz / majestic toolbar and doing it by hand.
Works completely fine if you are just checking a few keywords, but I guess you are looking for a tool where you can paste a bunch of lines in it?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, it would save a huge amount of time and effort if it were possible

Icing those toolbars works well - just a little manual effort and you don't have to spend out.

[h=2]General Competitive Research Tools[/h]
  • Akexa - shows traffic trends for competing websites. Alexa has a heavy webmaster bias that is nowhere near as noticeable at Compete or Quantcast.
  • Quantcast - shows site traffic and demographic trends and details.
  • Google trends for websites - free tool from Google showing traffic estimates, visitor country location, top 10 related websites, and top 10 related keywords. Only returns data for fairly high traffic websites though. Google also offers an Ad-planner, but it only shows data for sites in the Google display network.
  • Netpack Checker - desktop software which pulls in market research data from various 3rd party sources.
  • URL profiler - a similar service to NetPeak, which is a paid product & pulls in more data sources.
  • Archive org - see how old a website is & what it looked like in the past.
