Why is audacity not good enough for you,If you're trying to get free one,and not trials or something like that?
I'm asking because i'm using Audacity, so what would be the potential cons?

Yeah! I love WavePad too!WavePad is the one i loved after audacity.I used it for my paranormal researches

I have yet to find anything better than Audacity for recording just audio. I'm sure a simple google search could result in a lot of options.

If you are a Linux user then there are 2 nice tools to try, Ardour and Linux MultiMedia Studio. I think last one has Windows version too.
I don't know if there are anything better than Audacity but you can check RecordForAll, Wavosaur, Traverso-DAW which are free but bit too simple. But these are not exactly audio editors.
