Hello guys, I was wondering what would be the best forum platform. My main points are that it's 1) easy to install and moderate, 2) I have the opener unity to upload a nice custom logo and banner in the header 3) SEO friendly...

Please suggest me what forum you would use and more important, why you would use the one you recommend.

Your largest problem ahead is community creation. Cant bring in people with no content and you
cannot get content without people.

I would advice you MyBB, its the best solution for forum owners and it has a lot of plugins which will handle SEO and moderation aspects

I have that all set up, I have a site and want to make forum for it since very much visitors ask me that :)

Thank you, will look at it. Do you use it, and if so do you like it?

That depends whether you are looking for a free or paid solution.
If you are looking for a free solution then you could go with phpBB or MyBB since both of them are great, easy to customize and SEO friendly. And if you are looking for a paid solution then you could try vBulletin or IP Board since these two are the most popular and usually preferred by the users and administrators more rather anything else.

Try SMF, if you are with hostgator 2click install:)

good luck!

Not with HG but will take a look, thanks!

One other thing... How to handle the mass spam coming from xRumers and such tools?

Implement questions and answers while registrations. Spammers break captcha's easily

Oke friend I understand it, thank you for the tip and sorry BHW no spam on my forum hahaha :D

You could use plugins which can stop spam and require users to be atleast 1 day old before posting a new thread. And there are many different plugins available for different forum platforms which can help to create custom rules or add a new custom captcha which prevents spam user registrations and posts. But still, spammy posts can be created manually as well and to prevent them, you will need a good moderation team.

EDIT:

BHW never advises any user to spam any forum, it just helps users in sharing blackhat methods for educational means only. :p

Yes, I use it on a daily basis and I own 1 forum on myBB myself. I'm very statisfied with it and their community offers great support if you have a problem!

Thanks everyone for the tips, appreciated a lot

I just installed my first forum using SMF (Simple Machines Forum). I'm a big fan of vBulletain, and did not want to use anything else, but I wasn't going to pay the exorbitant license fees. I read a recommendation here on BHW for SMF, checked it out and found out:

1) It's open source, which is really good in the Mozilla/Firefox sense of the word. Lots of Mods, and you can create your own if you have the skills.
2) I've installed enough Mods now to believe that anything I might want, I can find. YouTube Mod allows embedded YouTube videos, numerous anti-spam Mods, etc... So far, I haven't needed anything I haven't found.
3) Reasonably good support forum. They are big believers in RTFM and not so much befriending newbs. Not overly friendly, but the information is there if you are willing to both ask for it and dig around a bit.
4) Installed extremely easily. BlueHost's cPanel has a premade installer for SMF, so I only had to push a few buttons and made ZERO decisions and it had the forum installed in about 15 seconds.
5) Has an Ad-Sense Mod. I've installed it, but haven't associated it with an account nor enabled it.
6) Has a Google Analytics Mod, which is working just fine.

I could go on. If you are interested in seeing my SMF Forum in action, send me a PM or find me on Skype. I think I have a link to it in my profile also.

My suggestion goes to MyBibi ,
it's very easy to maintain ,and provide some user friendly feature .
