Realizing building backlinks to quickly or choosing spammy sites can negatively effect SEO, what do people recommend as the very first few "no brainer" sites to build backlinks on for a brand new website that has no backlinks?

I know some of the best sites would be leading sites in the subject category matching the target site. I'm more interested in a handful of *specific* sites (i.e. yp.com), that are worthwhile regardless of category. This site is a local service business in a space without a lot of competition and the competition is also new businesses so I'm not anticipating it's going to take a whole lot of work.

Just wondering what currently are the "lowest hanging fruit?"

For new site, just do the social signals slowly, this will surely help t out said Sandbox, looking natural.
Then you can build any link each week with the volatility.

Exactly, just start the normal marketing path of any other website.

Once the website and content is created, 99% of webmasters go for social media marketing.

So, if you want to make your backlinks start 'naturally' do some social signals.

link velocity is important for new site, make sure to dripfeed the social signal, web 20, pbn

All sound advice here. Def don't want to slam them in the beginning and make sure to handle all that onpage stuff. This vid was a great share that covered that I saw the other week:

I would say the best first backlinks are to do the following.

Create a Twitter account, Pinterest account, Google+ Page, Facebook Fan Page, Youtube channel and Instagram account for your website. And add your homepage on your accounts (each of the accounts/pages allows you to add 1 link - do your homepage). That link will be ********, and high PR. Great backlinks.

p.s you can also do Soundcloud...

Then I'd do a first share on each of those pages/accounts (except Youtube) my website's homepage, together with keywords/description/hashtags.

That would be how I'd get started.

What about blog comments, forum signatures and social book marks ? Does anyone know where those come into play.

Also is reddit an example of a social book mark link? Some people say use "delicious.com" but those were 2011 posts

For blog comment / forum signature, don't overdone would be okay. Because you can't totally base on these link to give you link juice.

Creating a couple of these backlink helps to make your backlink profile more diverse and look natural. Too much would be like spam.

Get lots of content. Start slowly, build up your social presence and social traffic, then get a guest post or a single link, then 2 or 3, then grow up slowly.

I totally agree with Scorpion, plus I would tell to use all Google assets that you can get links from such as Google sites, google bookmarks, G+, youtube etc.

Also, you could get some quality backlinks from Authority sites but keep the number to 5 - 10 per week
