Best Ebook Creating Software + Templates?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section. However, I felt it was applicable.

Is there a software and possibly templates for creating ebooks that is better than OpenOffice? I was thinking about making something up for my LinkedIn homies and this thought occured to me. I don't have anything against OpenOffice, I just sometimes overlook new and better software options. I will do some google research, but sometimes there are hidden gems that others know about that I will not find easily on google.
