Not entirely true.
1. It's true that I wouldn't use software to generate links to my website but I would use some forums, blog comments, etc for web2 to give them a bit of a start and to index them.
2. On the other hand, I know some sites, ranking for thousands of keywords with tens of thousands of those links. And they managed to ride out all google updates for over 2 years (they used fiverr and hq or something services as I found footprints).
3. I'm sure those automated links are still good for parasites and churn and burn sites... no harm done there.
But as #1, I wouldn't use those links on my money site.
