I'm looking for the best looking and most advanced article directory script/plugin. ALL of the ones I've found on Google look absolutely horrid and Web -1.0 . Does anyone have any recommendations?

no not really mate... google doesnt make article directories easy these day either. there is a plugin for wordpress, but that makes the site bloaty although you can use it with themes which is nice. i heard about article ms, but who knows.
We have also used for Articles Directory WP for some of our clients. It worked fine and It has all features for article directory.

if you dont find anything on Google hire a freelancer to code a basic one shouldnt be too expensive i think
